Chronicling the adventures of our sabbatical and cross-country road trip

Road-trip Day 9 – Catching up on life and beginning to explore Rocky Mountain National Park

A new thing we're learning is that when living in an RV and doing a cross-country trip for a month, we have to create space for downtime and to catch up on life stuff (e.g. laundry, cleaning the RV, grocery shopping, etc.). It is hard for us to do when there are so many amazing things in front of us to explore but it is necessary. It's more important than life not in an RV because space is so confined and VERY quickly gets out of sorts. For example, you can't leave dishes on the counter to deal with later because your counter is tiny and the dishes will fly onto the floor when you start...

Road-trip Days 6, 7, and 8 – The long drive from Angola, IN to Estes Park, CO

After saying our goodbyes to Great Nana, we began the long slog to Estes Park, CO to visit Rocky Mountain National Park.  We found RV parks in Iowa City, IA and Kearney, NE (apparently the sandhill crane capital of the world) which treated us really well.  They were early mornings, long drives, and late nights but we tried to find something fun for the kids to do along the way.  We had a picnic at a park/playground outside of Chicago one day and visited the Omaha Children's Museum on another.  The Omaha Children's Museum was awesome and the kids (and we) really loved it...

Road-trip Days 4, 5, and (part of) 6 – Special time with Great Nana

On Day 4, we said goodbye to the Fosters and set out on the remaining 157 miles to Angola, IN. We stayed there for 3 days and 2 nights. We arrived mid-afternoon on the 10th and got to spend a few hours with Great Nana that afternoon/evening. We spent most of the 11th with her at her house and then a couple hours with her the morning of the 12th. The kids loved playing in her backyard - running around and playing with 2 big balls. (We also continued our tradition of at eating at Ruby Tuesday's while visiting lol.) Great Nana was in great spirits and looked and acted just like she did 10 years...

Road-trip Day 3 and part of Day 4 – Cave City, KY to Indianapolis, IN

On the 3rd day, we left Cave City, KY to begin our travels to our next destination - Angola, IN.  Some of Alicia's extended family live in Angola, including her grandmother (Kenzie's and Caleb's Great Nana) who we haven't seen since Kenzie was born.  So we really wanted to spend a couple of days with her (very sadly the rest of her family members were out of town when we visited so we missed seeing them).  It worked out that on our way to Angola we stopped after driving 221 miles in Indianapolis to spend time with some of our old DC friends, the Fosters, who moved there a couple years ago. ...

Road-trip Day 1 – This is REALLY happening!

And we're off!  Thank the Lord for this amazing opportunity to explore his beautiful creation as a family!  On Sunday July 7th, we set off on our 34 day RV road trip to the west coast! We completed our mad dash to load everything into our RV, said our very sad goodbyes to family, and concluded our month stay in GA. It felt like our time in Georgia was going to last for SO long and then in the blink of an eye it was over 🙁 We were really sad to leave and it was especially hard as we realized that we weren't going back home to DC. We looked forward to our time with family and...
